Do any of the materials in solder joints rust in orange?

The rusty orange appearance is likely explained by this:

" The RTLU which was recovered from the accident site..."

i.e., the ocean.

Curious of what everybody thinks.

Looking at Figure 35 on page 66 of the report...

1. Does it look like a typical solder joint?
2. Why the rusty orangey appearance on the area surrounding the solder joint?

Mike,

Thanks for sending this link - that report was very interesting. Note that the detailed discussion of solder cracks along with interesting photos is also on page 66.

Thanks,

Here's the report: http://kemhubri.dephub.go.id/knkt/ntsc_home/ntsc.htm

Discussion of the electrical short and cracked solder joint begins on page 104.

Best,

Mike
