I had an idea why sometimes it is the top and sometimes the bottom if there was a common artwork with a defect on, but it would have to be a pretty noticeable defect but if it’s mixed technology that kind of scuttles that idea.  Very odd that it’s a mixture of the two.

I got the impression that you’ve had boards of this design before with no issues, presumably from the same fabricator?

Have they re-panelised or re-tooled it for some reason and have created a new problem?  Fab houses do re-generate artworks regularly.
