Hooray! My first successful element quiz. I was thrilled I knew this one right away because it's the first and pretty much only useful thing to come from a really bad semi-conductor materials class in grad school.

The boys should have fun on this assignment. I'll have them do some yoga and stretching as a warmup for testing a new flex circuit design concept. Hopefully they'll work up a sufficient appetite so they won't complain about all the turkey sandwiches next week.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Todd

Subject: [TN] Element Quiz Answer

Here is the Element Quiz Answer:
>
> The Question:
> This element's name is derived from the Greek language. This element
> is
a constituent of misch metal. This element is used for the creation of glass with a high refractive index. A compound containing this element can be used as a binary semiconductor that is extremely toxic. Which element is being described?

The Answer:
The element is Lanthanum (La)! Lanthanum derives its name from the Greek word "lanthanein" meaning "to be hidden". Lanthanum is the first element in the lanthanoids or Rare Earth Elements (REEs). REEs are not really all that rare but acquired that name due to the difficulty of separating them as pure elements. Monazite sands are the primary source for La and many of the REEs. Misch metal is an alloy of iron and several REEs including lanthanum.
Misch metal can be pyrophoric and is used as lighter flints. Lanthanum arsenide (LaAs) is a binary semiconductor that is extremely toxic.
