Subject: Re: [TN] Selective Conformal Coat Systems

Latex is a sure way of creating an opportunity to have the coating lift due to the continuous film you form across the latex and the board. We minimise the use as a masking material unless we want a barrier / seal for dipping or low profile SM connectors.

Are you masking to the base of the board to form a complete seal between component and board surface to avoid flooding components? Is this required?

If you can leave a small gap between masking and board with tape then there is a less likely chance that the coating will bridge (which leads to lifting sometimes). This technique is not without pitfalls if your sprayers are energetic in their application of coating as it can cause flooding. But, with practice on the sprayers part and resisting the temptation to apply too much coating at a time, it is a highly effective method and minimises repair after removal.

I do have a presentation on masking if you want it that I can send to you off line. Its a little dated but it will certainly explain a little more clearly what I mean. Let me know and it will be on its way to you!

Best Regards

Dr Lee Hitchens
