Steve: Why would someone choose thick immersion silver over thin?
Bob: Some believe thick[er] immersion coatings have longer shelf life and/or increased capacity for multiple thermal excursions. A few folks even make the mistake of specifying immersion silver as a final, permanent finish. A mistake made easier by believing thicker makes everything just fine.

Steve: Are these different chemistries?
Bob: More likely variations of a basic immersion silver chemistry. All immersion coating thicknesses can be varied by manipulating such aspects as temperature, dwell time, even pH.
