I agree, I use here even some really old stuff from my father's work 
bench.
But there are some strange solder wire types from the early beginning 
of lead-fee era with the flux not as core but larded with flux in 
many fine punch holes. I would assume this flux would be gone or at 
least without any volatile components would be gone after a quite 
short shelf life.
