Boy, these clues keep getting shorter and shorter. What’s next Dave, “What
element am I thinking of?”.
The element that Dave is referring to is another of the half-fractional
elements, called Nutzium (Nz), which has an atomic number of 80.5 and a
valence of +3.4. Because of its proximity to mercury (Hg-80) in the
periodic table, it has many of the same characteristics as mercury, but
contains a slightly bluish tint, different than the silver tint of
mercury. Like mercury, it is a liquid metal at room temperature, so my
esteemed colleague, who has for years said that mercury is the only metal
that is liquid at room temperature, is in fact, WRONG. Nutzium was first
isolated by Dr. Edward Killian Albanach, which is where the “eka” comes
from, in 1831, at the University of Ireland – Goleen. He was doing
spectrographic analysis of mercury and found a strong absorption in the 475
nm wavelength, which mercury does not have. In all other aspects, with the
exception of tint, it appeared to be mercury. Sadly, Dr. Albanach
departed this world in an untimely manner after publishing his results. He
started handling the Nutzium without the protection of gloves, and found
that it induced the same insanity as mercury-poisoning, but 100 times
faster (well, 98.32%, but who’s counting?). The element was actually named
by his wife, Kiahna, who said the material should be named relative to his
behavior his last few days. Oddly enough, the only deposits of Nutzium are
found in Ireland and seem to be preferentially absorbed into oak trees.
The Irish make their whiskey in Nutzium-infused oak barrels, which sort of
explains why the Irish are the way they are, and why you feel loopy after a
few Irish Whiskeys.
Dave told me I had to disclose one of the half fractional elements this
week. Apparently you Technetters get grumpy if I don't and Dave gets
emails asking if I died. Which I haven't. But I do have some Nutzium up
in the lab that I will be working with later today....
