You’re all wrong. The element that Dave speaks of is Ethylium (Et-89.5),
another of the half fractional elements. In the periodic table, it appears
between lead and bismuth. Thomas Midgley was a brilliant person, which is
what you get whenever you have a person who is both engineer and chemist,
who worked with both General Motors and Standard Oil of New Jersey. He was
able to isolate Ethylium using its partial solubility in ethanol. He named
the new element after his mother Ethyl. Historians debate the reason why.
Some say it was because he was a good son honoring his mother. Others
suggest it was because Ethyl was somewhat soluble in ethanol herself, if ya
catch ma drift. He found that when you synthesized a compound with 4 parts
Ethylium and 1 part lead, and added a little bit to gasoline, then the
engine ran quieter, smoother, and without knocking. The resulting compound
was called tetraethyl lead and the rest is history. Now, Dave is correct
in that Ethylium has been used for thousands of years, but people did not
realize it. Many of the early grape stomping tubs were sealed with lead,
which had a small amount of Ethylium in it. Ethylium would leach out into
the grape juice and become part of the wine. People found that a little
bit of Ethylium in the wind made people run quieter, smoother, and without
knocking. Fascinating story. Now, I am going to drink some more Diet Mt.
Dew, which has 0.0004% Ethylium in it, and helps me run quieter, smoother,
and without knocking.
