The Answer:
The element is Iridium (Ir)! Iridium is one of the most dense elements on
earth which makes it very hard to machine but ideal for applications such
as medical instruments. For many years a bar of 90% platinum and 10%
iridium was the "golden" standard for the meter. This bar, housed in
France, has been replaced by the meter now defined as "the length of the
path traveled by light in a vacuum at the time of 1/299,792,458 of a
second". Sounds simple enough! Iridium derives its name from Iris, the
Greek Goddess of the rainbow.

- The boys were a bit taken aback when they arrived at our new facility and
it took a while to get them to stay still long enough for their photos to
be taken for the new ID access cards.  They've been busy all week working
on conformal coating drawings and decorating the hallway of my house. We're
having a new kitchen delivered in a few weeks so as a reward I've told them
they can eat up every bit of food they can find in the current kitchen.  I
guess we'll be eating out tonight!
