Tom,
One lead of PowerDi123 is used as a heatsink and that lead should meet 8.3.14.

James,

Sorry for the delay but I was on a webcast for the past couple hours.

Here is your answer with a little help from my friends at IPC:

Hi All,

I did a little research on the part and was able to find the physical description of the component.

Keep in mind that the main focus of the IPC-A-610 is the physical/visual characteristics of the component. The function of the component doesn't usually change the criteria to which you assess the component mounting. The component could carry out any number of functions while having the same physical lead configuration.

The PowerDI 123 looks like it would probably fall under the flat-lug lead criteria, section 8.3.9 of the IPC-A-610E (see attached). While the component isn't using the leads as an heat dissipation, the physical characteristics of the leads do not meet any other criteria in section 8.

The bottom only terminations would be, as the name implies, a component with only a termination on the bottom of the component having no designed extension beyond the component body.

It is always the prerogative of the designer to address the specific criteria to which the component will be evaluated. The final determination should involve the designer, manufacturer, and customer so that the final assembly is completed to the satisfaction of the customer.

I hope this helps clear up the questions.

Tom,

My original question referred to IPC-A-610.

Can you give the answer using this Document?

I feel like I asked a question and it was answered using a different spec. If I take this answer to the Assembly folks, they will not accept it (and neither will I).

Please answer using IPC-A-610 as the reference document.

Thanks!

Regards,

James
