I remember that picture.   I love some of Steve's pictures.  His assemblers have been some of the most talented ones I have ever seen.

Ron,

I actually had a recent design mod with MLCCs and a resistors that looked like Stonehenge and Steve's method was how we found it best to proceed.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll enquire if this is something that the SMT personnel can accomplish prior to reflow.
I think that during hand soldering the top chip is skewing slightly while soldering the opposite side, thus causing the incomplete fillet. And you’re right about the caps being fragile to hand soldering, I thought about that as well.
Hand soldering is certainly an art form when done correctly and something you can’t always teach. It’s like the differences between paint-by-number and fine artwork. The finer skills are inherent in the individual.

Quadruple stacks? Yikes!

Any other suggestions anyone?

Hi Ron,

Best thing to do is to print your board then place the components on the first layer, then before reflow dispense a dot of solder paste on each termination where you'll be doing your stacks, then hand place the stacked component then reflow everything. We did that all the time at a past employer. Takes a steady hand, but it's easier than hand soldering it and it's much better for the caps that way...they don't like 800-degree soldering irons that much.

Some people are better at this technique than others, I could do 0603's pretty easily, but we had some ladies that could do quadruple stacks with 0402's! No sh*t! Check it out:

Inspection is having to inspect at 10x mag and it's slowing down throughput.
