    Our wavesolder machine has both top and bottom preheaters, forced air convection on bottom and IR lamps on top. Interesting idea to run the assembly twice through the machine. Thanks for the input.

Hi Steve,

What kind of pre-heaters do you have in your machine? Convection or radiant IR? Do you have top and bottom pre-heaters or bottom only?

I have pre-heated assemblies in an oven before and then quickly carried them over to the machine so I didn't have to slow the conveyor speed to a crawl  and cause the board to spend too much time on the wave. 

But what I have also done before with heavy copper, large thermal mass boards is to run them through the machine with the wave off to pre-heat them, then quickly run them through again with the wave turned on. I would also turn the chip wave on to give the board another bump of heat before it hit the laminar wave. Topside fluxing also helps with barrel fill on thick, heavy boards.

Good Morning All:

     We have a unique application here where we need to solder a series of EPCOS Metalized Film Capacitors

6K000.html) to staggered strips of 1/16" solid copper. Some assemblies will consist of as many as 24 capacitors with a net panel size as large as 8" x 14". My concern is trying to determine how I can mass solder these assemblies. I'm concerned that I won't be able to adequate pre-heat the assembly at our wave solder machine to insure we get compliant solder fillets. I'm thinking we can preheat the assemblies before we place it into the machine, but with projected medium to high volume, I'm not sure if this is the best alternative. Looking for some advice. Thanks in advance.
