Juliano,
Great information on Tin and other metallic whiskers can be found at
http://nepp.nasa.gov/whisker/ . From what I have seen and read they
were a known phenomenon in the early days of radio, lead was alloyed to
the tin to reduce whiskering. I have observed whiskers that looked like
white mold growing on tin plated components, the largest I had captured
is 3/8" long and about 36 ga in diameter, easily seen with the naked
eye.
Had instances of the whiskers catastrophically destroying components as
well.
