The answer to this week's quiz is another of the half fraction elements,
Coldium-17.5. It is the only element that has a three letter designation.
Co could not be used as that is Cobalt, Cl is Chloride, Cd is Cadmium.
So, the International Tribunal of Naming Stuff assigned Coldium the symbol
of Brr. It is considered a REE - its rare, found on earth, and is an
element.

Coldium is only found in the polar regions of the earth and predominantly
in the polar ice caps. The mining of Coldium for spring steel production
is the true reason that the polar ice caps are melting. All that stuff
about global warming and CFCs destroying the polar ice caps are a smoke
screen. The material is found predominantly in the polar regions as the
Earth's magnetic field has swept the material there over the eons. There
is a mondo-huge deposit of it in Northern Canada, eh. That is why
Magnetic North is different than True North. Its them Canadians. Might
also explain why so many Canadians have magnetic personalities, eh?

Coldium, when alloyed with vanadium produces better wearing coils in
automobile suspensions, especially in very cold environments (like, the
Great White North, eh?), and also gives better resistance to
chloride-based corrosion, like salt. So basically any car going to
Minnesota has to have such coils for the winter. Early experiments with
Coldium in coil springs in Minnesota did not turn out well. It gets
REALLY magnetic below -40C and all the cars in International Falls,
Minnesota were fused into one big clump in January and had to wait for the
spring thaw to get them apart. They went to MUCH lower concentrations
after that. And for some reason that biologists have not been able to
fathom, it attracts moose/meese.

Now I shall sit back, and wait for Dave to run out of his cubicle and run
up to our lab to sniff whatever hallucinogen he takes when thinking up
disqualifications.......

Hi folks - Here is the Element Quiz Question:

The Question:
This element is one of the REEs. You refine one million pounds of the
Earth's crust to yield 2.5 pounds of this element. It is alloyed with
vanadium to form spring steel. It is magnetic at very low temperatures.
What element is being described?

The winner of the weekly element quiz will get the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios for the week.

- I've got some very important work for the boys this week. I'm going to
ask them to submerge several piles of brush in our local reservoir in
anticipation of the upcoming Spring crappie fishing season.

Week 44 Eddie Hofer, Rockwell Collins
- I think I'll have them practice a little baseball & hockey with my son
this week so I don't have to put on the skates or baseball glove.

Week 45 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc.
- Rumor has it Leland's facility had an ice storm so the boys put their
salt spreader attachments on their tractors and should
be at his place today to assist.

Week 46 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory
