George,

Some subtle changes this year - as I was on the Technical Committee that helped select papers. Jasbir Bath was our committee leader and brought some changes from organizing non- IPC conferences. In the past (I also had several years on the paper selection committee 6-8 years ago), IPC put out their call for papers and then organized what was slipped under the door. I agree, a lot of "semi-blatant commercialism". This year, we pretty well took what we got, but there were approximately 25 poster papers. AND, where we felt a session needed something new where no abstract was submitted, we SOLICITED papers/speakers. Not so many solicitations, but I know I suggested two papers/speakers, and others on the 12 person selection committee did likewise. Posters - not so bad for them - they were in the foyer outside the lunch areas - where most of the standards and tech session people ate lunch. So, viewing could take place all three days coming or going from lunch. Probably best place for a "semi-commercial" presentation.

I moderated two sessions with a total of seven papers. ALL were good, and several were excellent. I was really proud of the authors and speakers in the sessions (Reliability) that I chaired. Perhaps that was because there was more Tech Committee oversight of the abstracts and even of the submitted whole papers this year. I know Jasbir sent me at least 3 of the 7 papers for review a couple weeks before Expo. With the papers now on a website, and not printed or even available on CD, more can be done in the final 3 weeks before Expo.

Only one case this year, where I heard a speaker handed the moderator a memory stick with "an updated presentation" did commercialism get out of hand at the tech sessions.

I had OUTSTANDING speakers and material at a buzz session on Counterfeit. We should have done that in panel discussion format instead of speaker presentation mode. Also, this Counterfeit message should have been given to more of management, rather than engineering level late on Wednesday.

Well, we are learning. George, as a respected authority on boards and assembly, I think you would have been happy in the sessions where I happened to moderate.

Last, one of the IPC targets now is to reach out to younger people to attend, learn, and take leadership positions. We snowy haired dinosaurs won't be around forever.

Denny

Denny,

Although I agree with you I think we all knew this was coming. For many years
now the technical presentations at the conference have been migrating more and
more to sales presentations rather than peer review journal type presentations.
Fortunately, there are still a good number of people who attend the conference
primarily to interact with their colleagues. The one thing the conference
organizers need to consider is making sure the new younger conference attendees
get good sound technical information that will help them grow and can be used in
their job so that their respective companies will want to send them back.
Hospitality suites might be pleasurable but trying to get their companies to
allow them to return to future conferences by telling their companies the
conference had a great hospitality suite probably won't convince their
management to approve a return to future conferences.

Regards,
George

I AM APPALLED THAT IPC HAS STARTED TO ALLOW BIG HOSPITALITY SUITES. NEW
ADMINISTRATION IN BANNOCKBURN. NEW LESSONS TO BE LEARNED IN SELF-POLICING THE
EXPO SHOW.

May I suggest you divert them away from the hospitality suites!

Hi team - Clumpy and Kloumpios are here in Las Vegas at the IPC APEX show (Phil
brought them with him). They have been working in the committees and on the show
floor. The EQQ will be sent out at 8AM Las Vegas time.
