The answer to my esteemed colleagues? question is another of the half
fractional elements ? Bondium-14.5 (Bo-14.5). Bondium chloride is a red
pigment, but with shades of brown. The two oxide states are BoO2 and BoO3.
Bondium tetrafluoride is used as a plant fungicide, though it is only
known to be effective against certain kinds of seaweed. Bondium, in its
natural state is a fairly sticky material and does indeed occur in octopus
blood. The element tends to reside mostly in the suckers of the tentacles
of the octopus, which gives it such a phenomenally strong grip. Historical
records show that the ancient Phoenicians harvested Bondium from octopi
and used it as the first recorded superglue. Henkel subsequently cornered
the market on Bondium adhesives.

Bondium, oddly enough, does not exist as an ore or in any such ?mine-able?
rock formation. It can only be found in seawater. It was first isolated
by Dr. Agamemnon Agapenor-Ellis, of the University of Troy. Oddly enough,
one of Brian Ellis? forefathers. He was able to isolate the pure material
from octopi blood. Unfortunately, Dr. A (or Aggie as he was known to
friends) made the fatal mistake of trying to see what pure Bondium tasted
like and ended up bonding his mouth shut and slowly starved to death. As
a side bit of trivia, this is where the phrase ?my lips are sealed? comes
from.

I was surprised to find that my good friend, Joe Russeau, knew of Bondium
and gave me some additional information. When the script was being
written for one of the James Bond series of films, one of the script
writers was Donna Gottenidea, also of Brian Ellis? family (his
grandmother?s 4th cousin on her dad?s side, six times removed). As a
practical joke, during an extended writing session, she was glued to her
chair with Bondium. Being familiar with the material, it struck her muse
and the Bond film was later named Octopussy. True story.

Let?s see, did I cover everything in the clue ? history, oxide state,
pigment, smut, Octopus. Yup. I fling the gauntlet at Hillman.

Hi folks - Here is the Element Quiz Question (sorry its late but Clumpy
and Kloumpios were out late resulting in some issues that had to be
addressed - more on that in the EQQ answer):

The Question:
This element has been used for thousands of years. It has two oxide
states. Its chloride compound is used as red pigment in glass and
ceramics. It is used in plant fungicide to prevent smut. Octopus blood.
What element is being described?

The winner of the weekly element quiz will get the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios for the week.

So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:

Week 44 Eddie Hofer, Rockwell Collins
- I think I'll have them practice a little baseball & hockey with my son
this week so I don't have to put on the skates or baseball glove.

Week 45 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc.
- Rumor has it Leland's facility had an ice storm so the boys put their
salt spreader attachments on their tractors and should
be at his place today to assist.

Week 46 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory
- assisted with ????

Week 47 Phil Bavaro, L-3 Communications
- Grumpy seems to be able to hold his alcohol very well, but I cannot say

the same for Clumpy (or is it the other way around?). Personally I think
it had to do with one of them enjoying a good traditional meal (photo on
its way thru Steve) before drinking. Then again maybe it was just the
Irish whiskey that got to him. Either way they both seemed to like San
Diego a little too much so I am going to make them help me research NWOs
this week before we all leave for APEX.

Week 48 ????
- assisted with ????

Everyone have a safe week.
