For your situation, the most practical and trouble-free is the isolation transformer. But they sell stand-alone GFI real cheap ($20). The isolation xfmr will set you back a couple hundred dollars, depending on ampacity. The isolation xfmr is much more useful because you can directly debug non-isolated sections of power supplies with standard test equipment.

Hi Jim,

We could do either. The important part to me is the unit under test, since techs probe these with chassis cover off to troubleshoot. And there is some tiny chance of a unit being incorrectly wired at box build. I'm not much worried about the test equipment at the bench malfunctioning.

Best regards,

Raye,

Are you in regards to the unit under test or the entire workstation?

I have been tasked with ensuring that our functional test and troubleshooting workstations are set up safely. We are having some debate as to whether GFI protection is a good idea at these workstations. My question for the group is:

Have you ever had a GFI cause problems at a workstation?

I read a good thread on the technet archives about GFI at Hipot test, but I'm hoping for information at test stations in general.

Best regards,
Raye Rivera
