They provide a softer, non-skid surface that protects the bottomside components from getting scratched up and damaged against the metal trays. We have mats over our ESD fiberglass trays too.

It begs the question, why do you need the mats?
If your ovens are grounded, and your operator has a wrist strap plugged in with a 1 meg resistor, and the metal trays make connection with the frame of the oven, then why do you need ESD mats?

We're replacing the ESD mats on some of the metal trays in our assembly bake ovens (220 F) and looking for recommendations. Over the years several different types of mats have ended up in these ovens and their prolonged exposure to the high temperature discolored most of them and some have become brittle. From what I can tell most ESD mats include vinyls. Are there other ESD mat materials more suited to this environment?
