Hi All,

So does anybody else use these devices, and do you clean them with acetone?

Subject: Re: [TN] Acetone as a cleaning agent for PCBA's

Hi Pat!

I sent an email to Avago support inquiring about the cleaning recommendations in the datasheet and got this reply:

We received your inquiry about the assembly process for the VMMK-2203. You asked:

While reading the datasheet for the VMMK-2203, in the section that speaks about SMT attachment, there is two notes regarding cleaning; "7. Clean off flux per vendor’s recommendations.", and "8. Clean the module with Acetone. Rinse with alcohol. Allow the module to dry before testing."
My question is, is it necessary to clean with acetone and rinse with alcohol?
One other question is regarding solder paste, do I have to use halogen free solder paste?

Yes, we do recommend cleaning with Acetone and rinsing with alcohol.

Let us know if you have further questions.

I told you that this was going to be fun…(not!)

IMHO Acetone is a bad idea to much risk in damaging the board mask and
substrate. Acetone is used as a solvent for fiberglass resins. I
have stated before we use 200 proof dehydrated, un denatured alcohol.
Use in a well ventilated room. Runs about $750 a gal but lasts a long
time. That included the federal booze tax and Cal. state taxes.
Mildly denatured leaves a residue but will clean, we use that for
stainless steel cleaning. I learned about 200 proof in uncle sams
yacht and canoe club, that was all we were allowed to use. Had to
get it from the doc in minute quantity's.
