Acetone and styrofoam or "better" yet gasoline, styrofoam and some detergent
and you have a form of napalm.

But we digress.

Using acetone to clean boards? I think the customer must have been sniffing
the stuff.

Boiling point of 57C
181 mm of Hg vapor pressure at 20C
Flash point of MINUS 20C

Have any of you looked at the MSDS for this stuff? Yeah, yeah, I know
suppliers would make an MSDS for water look scary, but this is a serious
SOLVENT.

And people think heptane with a vapor pressure of 40 mm Hg at 20C is bad?!

Whether people are dunking whole boards in the stuff or putting it on a
Q-tip (repeatedly) (and how often is the Q-tip replaced?)I wouldn't be using
it outside of a bona fide fume hood with proper controls for heat sources
and sparking agents.

And on top of OSHA, what about state and local controls for VOCs?

Bad, bad choice.

Bev

Now here's something cool to do with acetone:

Naw, it won't hurt your boards... :o)

I don't think acetone has white residues, but maybe it attacks the
solder mask giving the appearance of white residue.

I would run a compatibility evaluation of acetone on the PCBA,
particularly the solder mask, before using it as a cleaner.

  Toxic - Yes
Flammable - Yes, May I add explosive vapors too!

But White Residue - No, I think that is wrong. Why do you suggest
this?

Any comments on White Residue ? (I almost don't ask this as White
Residues can be a horror story of a question. The Brian Ellis book
covers this
well.)
