Hi folks - Here is the Element Quiz Question Answer:
The Question:
This element was one of the first of its "type" to be widely available for
commercial use in applications such as dentistry and as an alloying agent
in stainless steel. The pure form of this element was not available until
1953. It is added to aluminum power transmission lines to improve
conductivity. What element is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Ytterbium (Yb)! Ytterbium was one of the first of the Rare
Earth Elements (REE)to be used in commercial applications. As with many of
the REEs, there was significant confusion in separating the individual
REEs thus Ytterbium was also called aldebaranium and cassiopeium at one
point in history. The salts of ytterbium are paramagnetic. Ytterbium ranks
45 in elemental abundance and 10th in abundance of the 17 REEs.
The winner of the weekly element quiz is going to be potentially
controversial but here we go anyway. In the past, I have used the response
time stamp provided by the Rockwell Firewall which is not always the same
as the response time stamp posted on TechNet. This week Eddie Hofer,
Rockwell Collins beat Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc by one minute which could
have been a result of Eddie being inside the Rockwell Firewall instead of
outside the Firewall like Leland. EQQAB has determined that, to be fair,
both Eddie and Leland are declared the winners of this week's quiz thus
both gentlemen will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios for the week.
The boys will start at Leland's facility and finish back here in Cedar
Rapids doing a task selected by Eddie.
And as requested by TechNet membership, the Element Quiz Question will be
released on a Thursday/Friday time schedule in the attempt to allow equal
opportunity to global EQQ participation. It was noted that technically
this week's EEQ was released on Friday for some of the participants.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:
