From experience, I know the Avago note is assuming that you clean the whole board normally, then go back with a secondary cleaning with a non-fibrous Q-Tip-like thing and try to make sure you've broken down and flushed out any flux residue between the part and the board. In low quantity jobs, it could even be done at the test station. As per my last response, high quantities are left "as an exercise to the student!"
I am surprised that Robert took all of our comments as an approval for using acetone as a cleaner. I agree that the residue in his pictures is likely the breakdown of some coating which is not acetone resistant. I believe that with the same wash process it didn't happen previously, but since he is using parts outside of the specs, the component vendors (or even one of their suppliers) could have easily changed something without notifying users.

I don't know, I want to talk with someone at Avago to clear things up, I just spotted that note in the datasheet when we quoted the board.
The board in question uses two of these little jewels, and the customer tells us that they've had problems with them in the previous builds, and was asking me if there was anything I could recommend to improve the yields. Didn't tell me what the issue was, just said that they've had problems with them...
Boy-o-boy, I can already tell that this is gonna be fun.

I have a customer that uses acetone to wipe down their PCBA's upon receipt.
The assemblies we make for them are cleaned using a closed loop aqueous board washer then sampled for cleanliness with our zero-ion tester per J-std-001E guidelines.
Recently this customer commented that boards appeared dirty upon cleaning with the acetone. Does anyone have any thoughts on this acetone cleaning process.
