Good deal!

Tell the guys I'm giving them a late Christmas present, and they can spend the week at home with their wives fulfilling their own set of chores. Maybe they'll get a chance to get back to NC a little later on in the year, and it will be warm enough to go fishing at the coast.

Have a great weekend, all.

Leland

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz Answer

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:
This element is severely regulated but only costs $10 per millionth of a gram. It has commercial applications in moisture measurement, bone cancer treatments and as a portable neutron source. The towns of Yreka, Eureka, and Barstow. What element is being described?

The Answer:
The element is Californium (Cf)! Californium was discovered by the UC Berkeley research team led by Seaborg in 1950. The Cf-252 isotope has a half life of 2.65 years thus making it useful in some commercial applications. Cf-252 spontaneously emits neutrons and since they have no electrical charge cause materials that absorb them to be radioactive. This trait is utilized for the analysis of oil bearing rock and in gold/silver mining as the radiated ore can be analyzed by the drill head electronics.
And for the folks who were stumped by the town names - they are all cities in the state of California in the USA.

The winner of the weekly element quiz is Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc. and he will get the services of Clumpy and Kloumpios.
