Hi Steve,

At one time when I started at a past employer they were trying to solder
press-fit connectors and what a mess it was!

Besides all the problems that Richard and Kevin have stated, good luck
trying to get decent looking solder joints, you may get decent
bottom-side joints, but depending on the design of the pins they may
restrict solder fill through the barrel.

I asked the question why they were soldering a press-fit connector
anyway and was told that they've never shipped a board without soldering
the connectors (press-fit was new to them). So they were trying to
solder these connectors and doing massive amounts of touch-up trying to
get good barrel fill. I had to call Harting and get them to send me an
email that stating that soldering of press-fit connectors was not
recommended, and then they stopped the practice. I made real good
friends with all the touch-up operators after that... :o)

Subject: [TN] Press Fit

All:

I have a customer who is specifying a press fit connector to be
soldered after the press fit operation. I've never heard of this and I
was wondering if there is any quality/reliability data in the industry
as to why one should/shouldn't do this. Our customer's explanation was
that it would add mechanical integrity to the joints. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Steve Vargas
