It's almost impossible. Numerous guitar blogs say the same.

Years ago I bought a Les Paul custom with gold plated hardware, and it didn't take long before the pickups and tuners looked terrible.

I've never since bought anything but nickel plate.

Subject: [TN] NTC cleaning gold finish

OK, the topic sounds like it could be on topic......

I have a new guitar. The electronics are cool, could be ENiG, but...

The real question is the Tuners. They are very thin gold plate over Nickel (sound familiar?). I have heard people suggest cleaning them with Naptha (or lighter fluid). I figured who would know better than the gurus here if that's a good idea.

Naptha on Gold over Nickel - good or bad idea?

Pete
