Of course, the material that Dave refers to is one of the half fractional elements, Dazzlium (Dz), most commonly found as Stannous Dazzlide (Sn2Dz4) in the ore Dentite.
Dazzlium was first isolated by Dr. P.F. Fang and Dr. I.R. Incisor of the Royal Scottish Dental College at Crianlarich. The sheep herds in the area surrounding Crianlarich seemed to have teeth that were abnormally strong, much whiter than usual, and oddly, the sheep tended to walk sideways. Even given the fact that Scottish Sheep are a little odder than normal, this was abnormal behavior.
As Drs. Fang and Incisor watched the sheep, it seemed that they would regularly chew on some of the softer rocks in the area. Analyzing the rocks led to the discovery and isolation of Dazzlium. They found that Dazzlium greatly strengthened the enamel of teeth and had a bleaching effect, which is why it was sometimes used in toothpaste. Unfortunately, it also had a bit of a narcotic effect, causing the Crianlarich sheep to be addicts.
Sadly, Drs. Fang and Incisor came to a sad end. My mining all the surface Dentite, there was none left for the sheep to chew, resulting in severe withdrawal. And a drug addicted sheep with super strong teeth and a bad attitude is a thing you don't want to see. The local sheep herds ate the research crews, and it remains to this day the only instance of sheep cannibalism in history. On the other hand, it provided Monty Python with lots of material in later years. The Royal Scottish Society of Sheep Drugs recommended that Dazzlium no longer be incorporated into toothpaste or cough syrup as a precautionary step.
Now, Dave's hint on "Carbonara" is an interesting story. Some of the refined Dazzlium made its way to Ferrieto, Italy, where the Italian College of Pizza is located. The R&D department there found that a little Dazzlium, added to tomatos, had a tendency to turn the tomatos black in the pizza ovens. It was frequently heard in the research kitchens:
Hey Luigi, whatsa dat on toppa you pizza?
Mario, datsa carbona.
As it turned out, no one could really get their minds wrapped around the concept of black pizza, even billled as Cajun Pizza, so Dazzlium was not used. However, Dazzlium is presently used to carmelize onions, which is why it is mined so heavily today.
