Acrylic tapes have their own troubles: The cohesion is not as good as silicone, so you can get globs of it coming off and contaminating your work and all of your tooling. It doesn't cause dewetting, but it can cause other problems. Post-It notes and that removable Scotch tape are the worst culprits. Most plating shops I've been in use silicone on polyester carrier. It appears that their standard cleaning techniques are adequate for removing any residue.

Only time I saw actual globs of DuPont Kapton adhesive come off was when I tried to use it to mask off some copper which had been adhesion promoted with CobraBond.

We see it often. The silicone adhesive may cause dewetting around the edges of the tape or tape dots. Sometimes this can be desirable to keep the coating off the masking making it easier to remove. Some coatings exhibit no dewetting what-so-ever. As Doug would say, it depends.

Do you think the silicone adhesive on Kapton and Shercon tapes can create a manufacturing issue during conformal coating or for sensitive electronics?
Doug, I would be especially interested in your respected input on this question.
