Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:
The Question:
This element has allotropic behavior. One of its allotropic forms acts
like dry ice and sublimates. This element was known, as part of some ores,
by the Chinese, Greeks and Romans as far back as 3600 BCE. The primary
source of this element today is as a by-product of nickel and copper
smelting. What element is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Arsenic (As)! Arsenic is one of the elements that has
allotropic behavior - aka it can have more than one crystal structure.
Gray Arsenic has a boiling point (614C) which is lower than its melting
point (817C) so when it goes from a solid to a vapor it sublimates. Some
copper ores contain significant amounts of arsenic and during the Bronze
age workers often became terminally ill during the copper smelting
process.
Bonus Question:
Provide the Greek word from which the modern element name was derived.
Bonus Answer:
The word Arsenic was derived from the Greek word "arsenikon". Some
historians believe the Arabic word "azzernikh" is also an ancient name for
the element.
The winner of the weekly element quiz is Guy Ramsey, RD Circuits and he
will get the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios for the week. Guy submitted both correct answers this week. The
