Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:
The Question:
There is no long term build up of this element on Earth. Less than one
gram has ever been produced for laboratory study. This element is
medically useful as a radioisotope tracer for thyroid gland issues. The
word "unstable". What is the element is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Astatine (At)! There would be no Astatine on earth without
the radioactive decay of uranium ore and the amount found on the earth at
any given time is very very small. And less than one gram has been
produced for laboratory uses. Astatine has a limited medical use as it
concentrates in the thyroid gland in a similar manner to iodine making is
a useful radioisotope tracer. Astatine is named after the Greek word
"astatos" which means "unstable".
The winner of the weekly element quiz is Phil Kinner, PVA and he will get
the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios for the week. The boys grabbed a cargo flight after finishing up
with Steve's tasks and are heading to Phil's facility. Just a note -
there won't be a Friday Element Quiz for June 8 and June 14 as I plan on
having the boys assist me on vacation after they finish assisting Phil -
they are really good at hauling whitewater kayaks and being shuttle
drivers as we paddle in the Southeast US on the Ocoee, Nantahala, French
Broad, Big Laurel Creek, and other great rivers for a week.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:
Past Quiz winners/tasks:
Week 1 Dick Krug, Spartan Complex Systems
Week 2 Laura Turbini, IRC
Week 3 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited
Week 3 Pat Goodyear, PGE
Week 4 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory
Week 5 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security
Week 6 Steve Gregory
Week 7 Phil Kinner, PVA
Week 8 Brian Ellis
Week 9 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited
Week 10 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc.
Week 11 Keith Calhoun, Sopark Corp
Week 12 Matthias Mansfeld, Mansfeld-Elektronik
- They can really help me with my CAD library (big pile of datasheets on
my desk, new stuff for these layouts). I'd give them a Cadstar crash
course. If the library work is done or if they need a break, they can have
much fun with our two cats. Later they could visit Munich.
Week 13 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc.
- assisted with performing cross sections for the team this week. If they
finish early, I'm going to let them spend a couple of days fishing at the
coast after our three day rain.
Week 14 Brian Ellis
- The boys are taking a red-eye flight back to you, eta 04:35 tomorrow
morning. They expect you to meet them at the airport as they have a
truck-load of Cypriot delicacies, including a bottle of zivania for Doug
to turn his Mountain Dew into Mountain firewater, ideal for cleaning PCBs.
My weather station is well calibrated, now.
Week 15 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security
- Tell the boys to be prepared for helping do FOD walks at one of my
suppliers. I bet when the employees at this supplier see these 2 guys on
the FOD walk it will get their attention and help raise awareness of the
importance of preventing FOD.
Week 16 Steve Gregory
-I need them to help me start-up a new (used) Vitronics/Soltec wave
machine we recently got here. It's gonna' be fun (if that's what you want
to call it), we have to fill the Vitronics with a tin wash so we can get
the wave formers and nozzles out, clean everything up, and then empty the
pot. Then we've got to empty the pot in the old Electrovert machine that
we have and have that solder ready for the Vitronics. Then we'll play
musical wave machines by moving the Electrovert and placing the Vitronics
where it was sitting, then we'll fill the Vitronics again.
Week 17 Phil Kinner, PVA
- assisted with ????
Everyone have a safe week!
