Folks,

This is what we have determined with regards to EDS on different solder mask vendors. Just not sure how it is bond. Need more input from others regarding their experience with solder mask and S.

Victor,

Doug,

S is always in a solder mask (at least I saw it on a very large number of different boards with EDS).

Well, if the sulfur is chemically bound into the mask, then I would agree.
But if the sulfur is there from an outside source, such as sulfur bearing cardboard or paper, rubber bands, or sulfur from pollutant gasses, then that sulfur is not bound and is free to do chemical damage and tarnish silver. So it all depends on whether it is IN the mask or ON the mask.

If you are concerned with the soldermask sulfur affecting an IAg finish, there is no concern. The amount of sulfur is typically too low, and being bound, does not affect the finish.

From what I know the answer is "Yes"

Fellow TechNetters:

We are doing some preliminary investigation of solder mask and have
found out that it contains low levels of sulfur. Not sure what sulfur
constituents. Is This a typical finding of sulfur?

Victor,
