Industrial equipment has a long life.

I worked in and toured several factories where there was a piece of
equipment over a 100 years old, still in production at the same location.
Typically large pieces that moved from prime mover to electric motors.
Either the design had changed little or there were only a few specialized
parts made on them per year. The gear cutter setup with a transit for the
12ft dia. master gears for a steel mill was one.

Installing a MES to monitor production operations is a challenge when
machines are run with
DEC, DG and 486 computers. There are some unusual hooks to the computer
such as the speaker controlling the rpm on a router on these old machines.
Often to tie in replaces the entire piece of machinery which IT did not
budget for . An item that goes on the capital project list for another day.

In 10 years any non networked machine will look very peculiar.
