ROTFLMAO!!

GREAT one Dewey!

I just about choked on the water I had in my mouth to keep from spitting it all over my monitor when I read that one Dewey!!!

I had to tell everyone in the office your joke to explain why I was laughing so hard!

Just like the blonde who took her car to the shop , because it was running rough. When fixed she asked the service man what the problem was. He said "just crap in the carburetor". She said how often do I have to do that?

Steve,

With our closed loop system I found that I needed to add a fine mesh filter on the Carbon bed inlet because it was not lasting long enough due to clogging from crap (dust, leads, solder, solder mask) off the boards. Clean the replaceable mesh regularly and I doubled by carbon bed life. I also added a flow meter on the outlet to flag the operators when the flow was dropping due to the crap in the mesh.

Hi Lloyd,

Yeah it does, but things get a little more complicated when you have a closed-loop cleaner.

TechSpray claims that their Wondermask WSOL 2004 is safe on ion beds & filters in closed-loop cleaning systems:

http://www.techspray.com/product-info.php?pId=66&cId=22

I called them to ask specifically what happens to the mask in a closed-loop system, does it get filtered out in the carbon bed? Or does it require some sort of pre-filter?

I was told that it would not be harmful to the ion beds, but I might start seeing my water starting to turn pink from the red dye in the mask. I was assured: "but it's not harmful..."

Well, that concerns me. I tend to agree with what Brian said in his
reply:

>>Good evening, all!

>>I personally would be very skeptical, indeed, of ANY w/s mask in a
closed loop system. It is asking for

>>reduced lifetime of carbon and/or DI columns.

>>I would suggest open loop pre-cleaning and use the closed loop just to
polish off. Alternatively,

>>a membrane micro-filter before the first column, but this will require
frequent backwash de-clogging.

>>Brian

I did find something that was written on one of Separation Technologists web pages of a water soluble mask that they offer that is not harmful in closed-loop systems:

http://www.separationtech.com/temporary_water.php

I called and talked with John Russo, and the first question he asked me was how much was my usage? I couldn't answer him. But he said that anything water soluble will affect

your beds in a closed-loop system. He said that he feels that his material will affect the beds less than others. He's sending me a sample to check out.

I'm beginning to think that if I want to protect my DI beds and the water in a closed-loop system, I will have to think about kapton tape and dots, or peelable masking...which I

know that my production manager won't be too excited about.

Just wondering if anybody has ever used any of the water soluble masks in a closed-loop system that claim to be "safe"?

Hi Lloyd,

I'm sorry I didn't make it clear. I'm referring to water soluble masks before wave solder, not conformal coating....

Tough to put into practice. With masking you want to get the masking material off before the coating has completely cured to minimize lifting and peeling. The washing machine could damage that uncured coating. Plus the coating is covering the masking so the water will not touch the masking to dissolve it until the coating is removed from it first. I tried it with parylene and we had to pick holes in the film so the water could access the masking then go back and trim off the excess after the masking dissolved and we were left with a "tent" of film

Re-usable boots are ideal but could be costly when you have many different style/sizes of connectors.

Like we tell all our customers, cheapest way to coat something is leave off all the connectors!!
