I have a similar device that I picked up at a Radio Shack many moons ago, it's pretty handy if you need to solder something where using a electric iron can be tricky, for example, ham radio antenna connections up on the roof, in the trunk of the car, etc. Places where a cord would be anything from an annoyance to near impossible. I agree with the rest of the comments, wouldn't use it on a PC board.
