Hi Mark
What other people do is a big "it depends"... (cheque is in the mail Doug)
I've only seen one site where they used a PnP that would do part
verification, they used it to check the first couple of parts placed per
job. More commonly what I have seen and what we do here is a second
person verification of the parts loaded on the machine against the setup
for the machine. It assumes that the right part is on the reel, which
is usually (99.999%) true. We have had occasion where we have received
incorrect parts on the reel, but that is very rare.
We are very high mix here, there is no way we can leave the line
permanently set up - we typically do 1 - 2 setups per day. You have to
be running serious volume to be able to leave the parts setup all the
time. The best I've managed was at a previous employer, we were running
a family of parts that had a fair bit of commonality and I was able to
leave the common parts on the machine most of the time. Usually though
that takes too many feeder slots, and too many feeders - one never has
enough feeders...
