Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:
This element is not found in nature. The beta rays produced by this
element have been used produce nuclear batteries for space craft
electrical functions. This element's beta rays have also been used to
produce a special laser that can communicate with submarines. What is the
element is being described?

The Answer:
The element is Promethium (Pm)! Promethium was the missing element in the
lanthanide rare earth series because it does not exist on Earth. So
technically it is the least abundant element on Earth. Pm was not
"discovered" until nuclear reactors became somewhat common. In 1902
scientists predicted that an element existed between Neodymium and
Samarium but the technology to confirm that prediction was still years
away. Promethium-147 has been used to produce space craft batteries with a
use life of 5 years and is a key part of a special laser for submarine
communications.

The winner of the weekly element quiz is Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc., and
he will get the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios for the week. The boys left James Wood's facility today and are
feeling very relaxed so Leland needs to put them to work! Leland beat Joe
Russeau by 37 seconds per the Rockwell Collins firewall stamp for being
first to post the correct answer.

The Friday element Quiz Arbitration Board (FEQAB) has disqualified the
answer submitted by Doug Pauls. Doug had stated that Evereadium decays
into an isotope of Neptunium, Np-92.5. However, research by the 7 FEQAB
members found there are 18 known Neptunium isotopes ranging from Np-242 to
Np-228 but no Np-92.5. The FEQAB would graciously reconsider its ruling of
Doug's submission if he can provide a industry acknowledged/published
documentation of the Np-92.5 isotope (since isotopes are based on atomic
weight and not atomic number, such a publication is very unlikely). The
FEQAB also stated they would never ever be able to watch an Eveready
battery commercial again without laughing.

So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:

Past Quiz winners/tasks:
Week 1 Dick Krug, Spartan Complex Systems
Week 2 Laura Turbini, IRC
Week 3 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited
Week 3 Pat Goodyear, PGE
Week 4 Joe Russeau, Precision Analysts Laboratory
Week 5 Tom Carroll, Boeing Defense, Space and Security

Week 6 Steve Gregory
- assisted with packing for Steve's next cross country move.

Week 7 Phil Kinner, PVA
- assisted with booth duty at a French tradeshow and then helped get an
Easter egg hunt ready for 20 kids

Week 8 Brian Ellis
- the guys arrived this morning, thanks. This is the end of the most
prolific part of the growing season and weeds abound. The John Deeres
will be very useful to help eliminate them. Kloumpios has said he will
prepare a traditional Cypriot ttavas (lamb pieces with veggies with
cumin and wild herbs, slow oven-cooked in a special unglazed clay pot -
Google it) for the 1 April Cyprus National Day.

Week 9 James Head, Crowcon Detection Instruments Limited
- My Welsh colleague Jeff, whose desk is next to mine, was on holiday this

last week so Clumpy and Kloumpios parked themselves in his seat and spent
the week spouting jibes and insults, particularly about English Rugby - it

was just like Jeff was still there! I think you could put that down as
"providing workplace entertainment and uplifting moral".

Week 10 Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc.
- assisted with ????

Everyone have a safe week!
