Graham,
I had the same issue till I figured out you had to be signed in in Google
to get the edit functions that allow you to place a pin. I have a GMAIL
account, signed in to that and the functions appear. Not sure how this is
done if you don't have a gmail account.

How do I add a pin? It is not obvious... at least to me it isn't
