If you don't abide by an industry specification, and you want to assure the part is reliable, then you will need to do some expensive, time consuming, analysis to determine whether it is a reliability issue. In this case, it may not be a reliability issue: For large chip caps many have found higher reliability with smaller pads--sometimes specifying pads half as wide as the part.

Sorry--no cheap, instant analysis/guarantee is available.

Actually even if you do adhere to an industry spec, it doesn't guarantee reliability--it is just what "everyone" else is doing so you don't stand out like some kind of moron when things go south. GENERALLY, the industry specs lead to decent lifetimes, but new technologies sometimes screw up anyway.

I've already shown them that this doesn't meet spec. It's not the only part that doesn't, we designed in a bunch that way, though not nearly as bad (a long story), What I really need to tell them is WHY the spec says there should be an IPC-610 joint (or even a IPC7351 design, for that matter). I've expressed my reliability concerns based on stress points, etc., but they look a part, and board, and solder, and think they can ship it and not worry. We will have about 1200 of these installed, they aren't seeing a problem.
