That's great! I guess it just goes to show that the early bird does get the
worm. Usually, by the time see the quiz there are already numerous answers.
I just happened to be in extra early Friday when the quiz was posted. Well,
I sure will be thankful for their assistance. There is lots going on in the
lab. So I'm going to check their skills at running an ion chromatograph and
see how adept they are at reviewing SIR data this week. Should be a fun
week with the two of them in-house.

Cheers,

Joe Russeau

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz Answer

> Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:
>
> The Question:
> A compound of this element is considered by many chemists to be the most
> powerful base to ever be discovered. The pure element was not isolated
> until 1875. This element is used in the polishing of high refraction

> The Answer:
>
> The element is Cesium (Ce)! Cesium hydroxide is easily manufactured by
> dropping cesium metal in water - the very violent reaction produces
> hydrogen and cesium hydroxide. Hillebrand and Norton were able to first
> produce pure Ce in 1875 despite Ce being detected by chemists as early as
> 1803. The element name is derived from the Latin coesius - "sky blue" for
> the element's characteristic blue lines of its spectrum.
