Just a guess here but could it be an optical scanner for taking a 3-D picture of an item for CAD processing?   I saw a couple of years ago at a machinists trade show a 3-D printer that was coupled with a laser/optical scanner whatever was placed in the box with the scanner was copied by the printer in just a few minutes.  It had an X,Y,Z table with a rotating scan head above it.
