Alan,

I would think the vias could be pulling some solder but I'm more interested in the stencil pattern for the slug.  My assembler found that a cross design worked better as too much paste on the slug tends to raise the part so the outside pads don't all get soldered.

The other thing I do is to lengthen the outside pads which provides a reservoir of solder that can be pulled into the pads if needed and also makes probing easy.

Have not had your problem "yet".
