You may wish to examine the flux percentage level in your wire solder. Usually runs at .8%, 1.2%, or 3% or something similar. If you are using 3% flux content, you will get more spattering. To determine the level of spattering, there is a test for this in IPC-TM-650.

Dear Technos,

What do you think about this? Sounds pompous, but I wonder if this existed...

We noticed many solder balls and splashes on a particular board, after manual soldering or repairs/touch-ups and I wonder if there would be a particular brand/model of solder wire which is less splash prone.
