Using GC Preview, or Pentalogic's free tool should give you an accurate 
image of your Gerbers.
I would recommend downloading the files for a viewer only from the 
creator's web site, not from any 3rd party web sites.

I don't remember Camtastic ever having a free version. I used it as part 
of PCAD. When Altium acquired PCAD they made it part of the Altium 
Designer tool set. It is not just a viewer, but can edit Gerbers as 
well. If you can get a hold of an old PCAD CD you could install it but 
you will need the license numbers to do so (be aware that the old PCAD 
licenses are still tracked by Altium as to who owns them though their 
records are not always up to date or accurate. If a customer moves from 
PCAD to Altium Designer, the PCAD license is used as the Designer license).
