Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:
This element plays no biological role that humans have identified. A
radioactive isotope of this element has been used in the treatment of
ovarian cancer. This element improves magnesium castings. The moon rocks
contain a relatively high percentage of this element. What element is
being described?

The Answer:
The element is Yttrium (Y)! Yttrium-90 is used in a number of cancer
treatments since the isotope has a half life of 64 hours. Yttrium-90 is
produced when strontium-90 decays (strontium-90 is produced as a fission
product in nuclear reactors and has a half life of 29 years). The moon
rocks and dust collected by the Apollo Moon program were shown to contain
relatively high levels of Y in them when analyzed.

The winner of the weekly element quiz is Leland Woodall, CSTech Inc. and
he will get the services of Clumpy
and Kloumpios for the week.

The Friday Element Quiz Arbitration Board (FEQAB) reviewed the submission
of Lunarium by Doug Pauls and provided the follow rationale for again
disqualification of his answer. Doug incorrectly attributed the Moon's
light and dark phases to Lunarium. The FEQAB historical files show that
Lunarium does not come from the moon but can be found in Institutions for
the Insane in the state of Wisconsin. Lunarium is produced at these
facilities and is a primary construction material for the light bulbs used
in refrigerators. When you open the refrigerator door, the Lunarium emits
light and when you close the refrigerator door, Lunarium no longer emits
light thus resolving the age old question "Is the light bulb still on in
the refrigerator when the door is closed"? The FEQAB files also show that
long term exposure to Lunarium results in lunacy - which would explain
alot for Doug's behavior.
