Well yes and no. I would enlarge that to say: to a large extent the industry
is driven by the tick box mentality which means people just look for a spec
to pass, so they can tick the box.
This makes people more concerned with not being shown to be
wrong rather than being right. Not the same thing at all.
Usually blamed on the litigatious age we live in, but I am also inclined to
think people are forced to protect themselves against the over involvement
of bean counting management.

Every generation wants to learn from it own mistakes rather than other
people's. Except the really bright people of course.

The upside for technical support guys like me is that once you've learned
the basics you only have to learn the new jargon and apply to old knowledge.
For example
When I started out we used to suck it and see,
Then we got cleverer and did a series of empirical tests
These days we carry out a D.O.E.
The downside is that decades of answering the same questions gets a little
tedious.
Eg What causes white residues after cleaning!

I hope not as well! I found some real live dead bugs in parts made offshore
in the early days. Looked like a baby cockroach! Boy do I wish I had a SEM
photo of that now!!
But, to a point made in previous post wrt wire bonding knowledge.
I have observed a greater tendency for manufacturing companies [stateside &
abroad] to allow [expect] the machine manufacturer to set up the process.
Some of this appears to be just blind ignorance. In other cases, it is
'cost cutting'.
Scares the bejeebers out of me to have a non-vested-interest party setting
up a process. I can readily set up a machine to run well, but that does not
guarantee the quality of the product coming off it!
In some cases, it appears that 'we' have become complacent and are under the

like wire bonding, are 'plug and chug'. Regardless of how much info is out
there - some individuals are doomed repeat the failures of the past.
You just want to smack 'em up against the side of the head!

A reflexion á propos investment. I wonder if american electronic industries
are still slow when it comes to cope with the asiatic countries. I have not
been in a US plant for many years, so hopefully the situation is different
today..When I vvisited TI, MOTA, Harris, Fairchild etc, I was struck by all
modern machines and equipments, but I was struck the other way when I
visited many small and medium sized industries. E.g. a company that claimed
that they were in the front of technology They had the oldest machines I had
ever seen, and a lot of their HiTec was in a huge and dark garage!
Another industry had indeed a modern set of punching, drilling and assembly
line, but the machines stood on the transport blocks still and the floor was
naked soil covered sand! A third large and well known industry had a
reception that reminded of a café and everything was from the WW2 . I
visited a company from which we were going to buy qualified components for
SPACE. The mounting was done on old wooden benches, clean parts mixed with
coffee mugs and caps and clothes. I asked for a microscope and took some
parts just before they were weld sealed. I found hair from the operator,
small human debris and spill from cakes! I felt a strong conservatism and
suspicion against modernizing. I hope this is not found in today's
USA....can't be any left.
