Hi Doug - the Friday Element Quiz Arbitration Board (FEQAB) spend the
weekend researching your proposed answer to the Friday Element Quiz. The
FEQAB files did not contain sufficient information for the 7 board members
to make a ruling so they contacted the American Dental Association (ADA)
for additional information and opinion. The ADA addresses issues requiring
arbitration so they have a panel of 5 professionals on staff - you may
have seen reported on TV where 4 out of 5 dentists have ruled on a
particular issue. The ADA panel of 5 reviewed the FEQAB and ADA files
researching the technical aspects of your response. In the end, 4 our of 5
dentists did not accept your response of "Toothium" as an acceptable
answer. The FEQAB thanks you for your efforts and encourages your
continued participation in the Quiz.

Ahh, a chance for some education.
The answer is Toothium, another of the half fractional elements, which
lies between silver and cadmium in the outdated "standard" periodic
tables. Silver has often been used for dental work, but Toothium has just
enough of the toxic effects of cadmium to make it impractical for use in
false teeth. Interestingly, Toothium is found naturally in the ore called
Dentite, taken from the Latin word "Bitmeous" (translated "Bite Me").
While historians are not in agreement on this, it is believed that a large
surface vein of Dentite made a small village in southern Spain
particularly disagreeable when trace amounts leached into the city water
supply, and the term Bite Me was frequently used there. This was early in
the Roman Empire, so details are sketchy.
The use of small amounts of Toothium in solid state electronics is mostly
as a counter agent to LEDs. Toothium has the ability to absorb some
levels of photons and so can make LEDs dimmer. Low energy light bulbs
would actually be high output light bulbs except for Toothium which acts
as a contaminant. Early dental experiments also showed that the subjects
teeth got noticeably less bright when Toothium was present, at least up
until the point the subject died.
Toothium was not successfully isolated until 1956 by a team of
researchers, and you're NOT going to believe this, by Drs. Fang and Molar
at Colgate University. They were assisted by Dr. Crest and Dr. Floss,
both doing their post doc work at Colgate.
I really have a good use for Clumpy and Kloumpios this next week, but I
wait in breathless anticipation to see how my neanderthal colleague
disqualifies me this week.

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Question:
The Question:
This element has no biological role. The element is used in solid state
devices and low energy light bulbs. A ceramic containing this element was
once proposed for making false teeth but that idea never became a
commercially reality. What element is being described?
The winner of the weekly element quiz will get the services of Clumpy and
Kloumpios for the week.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have done the following:
