Our stainless soldering application was a drain wire on a thin stainless foil for a transformer shield. The special flux was VERY active and required lots of washing to neutralize the flux. We soldered it with 63/37 or SAC305 I think. Oh, that is interesting... We don't have any 63/37 or SAC305 that is not cored with flux. So it sounds like we were actually creating quite the chemistry project. Starting research and testing with non-flux core solder.

Thanks for triggering a wake-up call.

Phil

When we solder stainless we typically silver solder or silver braze the stainless, possible solution would be to silver braze a pad on the stainless then solder using Sn-Pb to the board.

Should be able to solder directly to iron in S/S as long as there is no thick passivation layer or surface chemical enhancement....

Perhaps a nickel under plate?

Preplate the solder area with Sn or SnPb. You may need a copper underplate.

Hi all,

has anybody experience with soldering stainless steel parts directly on a PCB? What solder process work fine?

Application is a medical sensor with body contacts.

Torsten
