Also, Ioan, check IPC 7711-7721. It has some really good info on conformal coat removal methods, including a chart by coating type and the corresponding method of removal that is recommended.

I totally agree with Dewey on this. I am not sure where Dewey was going with partial coating and stripping but..

..strip and re-coat will be faster and more effective. Having run our own coating service for many years, mucking around with "thousands of boards" is going to cause more trouble than it solves.

For example, you locally remove the coating (or solder through) then you have re-solder the replacement component so how are you going to effectively clean the surrounding area - especially given that the low surface energy of the cleaning solvent will take it everywhere?

Chemically strip - de-solder - replace component and re-solder - clean - re-coat. Job done..

.they even have a new coat to show off when they get back into service. Be careful that your partial new coat doesn't become a fur!
