Does your vendor provide (1) crimp tool? (2) acceptance criteria? If not, where you get your cable?

Subject: Re: [TN] Crimping requirements - coax cable

Hi Linda, thank you for your reply.

I had already looked into section 13 of IPC/WHMA-A-620, but there are only two crimp configurations - clamped ground ring and crimped ferrule - whereas my coax cable was crimped onto an open barrel crimp almost identical to that found in sect 5.1 of the IPC spec.

Hence my confusion: in the absence of specific requirements for coax cables mated to open barrel crimps, should a coax cable then be treated like a regular wire and follow the accept/reject criteria of 5.1.3?

Best regards,

Julien Meyer

Julien,
Check out the IPC/WHMA-A-620, page 13-1, there is a whole section on Coaxial Cables.

Subject: [TN] Crimping requirements - coax cable

Hi TechNetters,

Does anyone have experience with the IPC requirements for crimping coax cables?

We received a shipment of crimped coax cables where the conductor crimp was not fully closed. Therefore, a substantial section of braid was not captured by the conductor crimp.

If this were a regular wire, it would fail according to IPC for all product classes, but since it's a coax cable, I'm a little less certain.

I posted some pics here: https://plus.google.com/photos/104770679384262376856/albums/5802515956087514305?authkey=CPK-v7qT1MnrwQE

Could you advise?

Best,

Julien Meyer
