There are foam-tipped Q-tips. There are two different kinds. One has a split foam wrapped around a plastic stick, don't buy them, they fall off with any serious scrubbing action. The other kind are molded on over the stick and stay on really well. They are Foamtec International UltraSOLV Swabs PN HT1932-500. They work great. Try them. If you need ESD-safe swabs, try ITW Chemtronics part no. 163-279 or 411-868. Just look in the Stanley Supply catalog under "swabs".
I tested the Foamtec non-ESD swabs with a field meter, but could not generate 5 volts when rubbing, wet or dry. So I just specified the non-ESD ones for $15 per 100 as opposed to $25.00 for the anti-static ones.

Dear Technos,

We need to locally strip the acrylic coating (1B31S) from a few components, on a few thousands of boards. Right now we're using Q-tips to do the rubbing and, besides having to pluck tons of fibers afterwards, we're also going through a lot of Q-tips.

So the question is: is there anything else we can use, that will be more effective, cleaner and more economical?

Thank you,

Ioan Tempea
