Local and corporate IT will have strong opinions.
Supply chain systems must deal with it easily.

If you link to SAP then better off with dumb number.
SAP has other tools for the classification that are strong if purchased and
turned on but the number system and casual user interface is unintelligent.

There were a number of awkward part numbers migrated into the system as
different units of the company implemented it.
